This site is believed to be the meeting point between the Buddhist monk Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa; significant, because it is venerated as the birth place of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It is now a pilgrimage site consisting of numerous religious monuments and abandoned structures. Mihintale is popularly referred to as ‘the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka’.
